Needles Lodge No.2838 BBQ

A beautiful Summer's day on the Isle of Wight. A glorious occasion held in Totland, the annual Needles Lodge No.2838 BBQ. The build up to this much anticipated event commenced on Wednesday when safe hand over in the travelling rucksack took place when Square Bear Guardian Clive Dobson met with Philip Thorne. The new Bear Carer being Miss Hollie Bolton. Hollie is the daughter of W.Bro Adrian Bolton, Deputy Provincial Grand Sword Bearer and a member of Vectis Fairway Lodge. Hollie's Grandad is W.Bro. Philip Thorne, Director of Ceremonies of Needles Lodge. Phil and Adrian share their home with their respective families in Totland and was the venue for todays BBQ. Since Wednesday Hollie has been an enthusiastic bear carer and made sure a comfortable bed was to be had and only the best of breakfast most suitable for a bear. Much hard work was put in washing all the garden furniture which was followed by a well earned rest on the sun lounger. Seventy five guests attended the BBQ this afternoon. A wonderful time was spent together. All had stories and memories to share regarding the lodge Worshipful Master, W.Bro. Nick Sillence who sadly past to the grand lodge above whilst on holiday with his wife Suzanne just a few weeks ago. This would have been Suzanne and Nicks final social event during Nicks year as master of the lodge. £340 was raised in the raffle to add to other monies raised during the year which will now total well over £3000 to donate to Suzanne and Nick's nominated charity, The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. Hollie visited all the tables at which guests were seated making Square Bear introductions and enabling photo opportunities. The garden is now much quieter, the guests having dispersed and after tidying up Hollie is looking forward to a restful evening cuddling Square Bear watching the sun go down over the Solent. Many thanks to Hollie and all the guests at Needles Lodge for a splendid day.

Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge No.9263

Another superb meeting at the Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge No.9263 last night, this time meeting at the Cosham Masonic Centre, an excellent venue. The meeting was conducted impeccably by the Worshipful Master, Jonathan Bell and his team of officers.

All the brethren present were treated to a marvellous demonstration of the 3rd Degree Lecture given by the 2016 stewards and other lodge officers. The style and delivery was first class. The lecture team leader W.Bro. Sean Jordan can feel justly proud of his team's performance.

The Worshipful Master welcomed many visitors, foremost of these was V.W.Bro. Richard Hone, President of the Masonic Charitable Foundation who gave a very informative presentation on the development of the foundation and its aims. He explained why it was necessary for the former masonic trusts to be brought together in this new venture and reassured the brethren that it will continue to serve all those in need as the former trusts had done. During the last financial year in excess of £552,000 had been made available to beneficiaries across our province.

The members of the lodge accepted the nominations and elections of brethren for various positions of office and lodge responsibility for the ensuing year, most notably that of Worshipful Master, W.Bro. David Hilton MBE, AGSwdB, PPGSwdB.

Those brethren who were appointed by the Provincial Grand Master as Provincial Grand Stewards at the recent Annual General Meeting in Southampton were invited guests and were proposed and seconded as members of the lodge. All the members of PGSL No.9263 look forward to welcoming them at the Installation meeting in November.

The Festive Board which followed was, as is always the case at this gathering, a lively affair. It was pleasing to dine with two former Square Bear Carers , Andy G Harvey , newly appointed steward and Jordan Fretter, a picture is included below. Jordan invited Square Bear to attend his ceremony of installation at Domus Dei Lodge No.5151 in April next year. This will now be added to the Diary of Adventures.

Other photo opportunities were made available with the Worshipful Master and V.W.Bro. Richard Hone. The lodge wardens David Hilton & Paul Hillyard, lodge deacons Darren Wood & Paul Davis with inner guard Dennis Skouras, and a particularly nice picture with David Hilton, Master Elect and Wardens for the ensuing year Paul Hillyard and James Sampson.

A fine evening surely enjoyed by all present. Many thanks to all at PGSL No.9263.

Provincial AGM

Wednesday 6th. July 2016 is the most important day in the Provincial Diary for Hampshire and Isle of Wight. The occasion of the Annual General Meeting. Many hours of work was put into the planning and preparation for this prestigious event by an untold number of brethren, be they the Provincial Grand Secretary and his supporting team at provincial office, The Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies and his deputies or those unsung brethren from the Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge, and many more. All this hard work culminates in a celebration of brethren who have received first appointments or promotions in recognition of their hard work and dedication not just achieved thus far but in to the future also.

A careful hand over from Bear Carer Gary Spencer-Humphrey to Bear Carer Bob Gontar took place and all brethren enjoyed a magnificent meeting at the Guildhall in Southampton. As always the centre piece to the proceedings was the address given by the Provincial Grand Master, Michael Wilks, as usual an inspiring address setting the scene for the year ahead in the province.

After the meeting brethren dispersed to many venues across Southampton for private functions to wine and dine together. For many brethren the hot ticket in town was at the Novotel. It was here that introductions to many brethren were made, making new friends and renewing old acquaintances with several photo opportunities taken.

Many thanks to Bob Gontar for his hard work and acting as Bear Carer.

Another visit to be made this week, can you guess where, it is not posted in the Diary of Adventures, it will undoubtedly be an occasion to saviour. See you soon, Square Bear.
